Literacy Means Freedom: Your Education Has Been Bought and Paid for In Blood This performance waeves together inspiring stories of copourage and compassion in the face of illiteracy: histrical African American narratives from slavery to comtemporary times will illuminatge the importance of reading the word and understanding the world to shape one's destiny and to fight for social change in one's community and in our society. Drawing from the life of the great orator Frederick Douglas, Malcolm X's transformation in prison through self-education, Endesha Ida Mae Hollins' desire to learn how to write and join The Movement so that she could help SNCC workers in Mississippi, and others (research needed to determine the scope of lives to draw from). This perfoemance and workshop will explore the personal dreams, challenges, and triumphs of people who wanted to reach their full potential and who also understood the meaning of freedom and the significance of the freedom struggle in changing the lives of people in the world. $$$ - FUNDING NEEDED = $16 - $17K Creative development funding would allow me to: 1. do the research to develop the text (time/research/play development) ($12,000 to free me from work for 3 months so I can do full-time research & writing. Expenses $1,000 would include: xeroxing, gas, and the purchasing of books and videos) 2. hire a director to help me move from the page to the stage to pu the piece on its feet. ($3,000 = $50 hr for 60 hours/20 days of rehearsals) 3. possible sound design of audio and music ($1,000) Questions or Clarification About Project:
